Now that I’ve given some background details (here, here, here, and here) as to how and why we moved to Windsor, Ontario almost a year ago, here’s a bit about how I ended up keeping my job and working from my new home.
Excellent, exciting, fantabulous news!

I received some news today that will dramatically and very positively affect our upcoming move to Windsor this Spring, and I’m feeling pretty darn chuffed about it!
A few weeks ago a throwaway comment in an online conversation with a friend sparked a thought that immediately intrigued me: could I possibly carry out some of the responsibilities of my job from an offsite location (like Windsor!) via telework?
The idea seemed rather crazy at first – after all, this isn’t something that had ever even occurred to me before, and Windsor is an awfully long way from Victoria – but the more thought I gave it and the more investigation I did, the more I realized that it could be totally doable. So a few weeks ago, after an encouraging preliminary conversation with the Principal of the company, I drafted a proposal that outlined how I saw a part-time telework situation playing out at our office. I presented my proposal for consideration to the Shareholders of the company, and found out this afternoon that they’ve agreed to go ahead with it!
So, once I’ve moved, it looks as though I’ll be working part-time from my home in Windsor, and another individual (who will be hired before I leave Victoria) will carry out the other half of my current responsibilities from our Victoria office.
I’m so pleased that this is going to work out! In many ways it feels as though I’m getting the best of both worlds – I get to continue working with a group of people I like, doing the parts of my job that I enjoy, and I also get to work part-time, live in a city with a much lower cost of living, and lose that tedious daily commute. It’s like the icing on the cake and a cherry on top! Plus, now that I no longer have to worry about finding a job in a brand new city while living here in Victoria, I can focus my energies on selling our home, finding a new one, packing, moving, and settling into our new city.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: life is good.
