The Opening

NaBloPoMo November 2012 Prompt
Tuesday, November 20, 2012:

Talk about the opening of your favourite book.

I test the weight of the volume in my hands and find it to be heavy with promise – promise of a bold journey to a different world, a tantalizing glimpse into another life, a taste of ideas beyond my own.

I open the front cover, leaf almost reverently through the first pages, and arrive at the beginning of an adventure.

I savor the first few sentences, and, hesitant to hasten the process of completion, revisit them several times before giving in to the lure of what’s to come and losing myself in the rest of the story.

In the end, even in spite of the anticipation, this particular volume might not actually prove to be a treasure at all… but in those first thrilling moments of opening a new book, the delight of its potential makes it my favourite at that moment in time.

Tell me about the opening of your favourite book.
