oh, it’s commonplace
every year
without fail
too many to count
born, live, die
under porches
in alleyways
on the street
too many, too hard, too soon
unwanted
uncared for
unloved
and the heartbreaking cycle
continues
but you
you were one of the lucky ones
taken from danger to safety
rescued, tended, cherished
one in a million
singled out
unique
and now you are ours
a precious little life
to shelter
to nurture
to love
welcome to the family
